Redact sensitive information from PDFs offline

Redaction is the moment where uploading your PDF is the most ironic mistake: you're trying to hide information from third parties, and the redaction tool is itself a third party. iSharePDF redacts inside the browser tab. The document with the unredacted secrets never leaves your machine โ€” including during the redaction process.

Why iSharePDF for confidential PDF redaction

True redaction requires two things: the visible text must be covered, and the underlying bytes must not be recoverable. Most online editors do the first, fail at the second, AND they store your unredacted source on their servers. iSharePDF performs both steps locally:

For lawyers redacting privileged exhibits before disclosure, journalists protecting sources, or HR teams anonymizing salary data for a board report, this is the only architecture that actually protects what redaction is meant to protect.

How it works in 5 steps

  1. Open isharepdf.com/app/tools/editpdf in your browser.
  2. Drop the PDF you need to redact. It loads locally โ€” no upload.
  3. Use the rectangle tool with fill set to black to cover the sensitive zones.
  4. For high-stakes redaction, use "Erase content" first on the original glyphs, then add the black rectangle as a visual confirmation.
  5. Save and download. The redacted PDF is the only artifact that exists outside your machine โ€” and only on YOUR disk.

Verify it yourself with DevTools

Open DevTools (F12), Network tab, "Preserve log" checked. Load a PDF, draw a redaction rectangle, save the file. The Network tab will show zero outbound requests carrying PDF content. The same test on iLovePDF Editor or SmallPDF's editor will show a multi-megabyte POST with your unredacted source.

Common redaction workflows

Legal disclosure: exhibits that contain attorney-client privileged paragraphs must be redacted before opposing counsel sees them. Doing this in a browser tab โ€” with no upload โ€” eliminates the "did our SaaS vendor get our exhibits before the trial?" question entirely.

HR + GDPR: a board report on salary distribution must not show individual names. Local redaction keeps the individual-level source on the laptop of the person preparing the report, and only the anonymized version moves anywhere.

Journalism + source protection: a PDF leaked by a source may contain identifiers (email signatures, watermarks, EXIF). Local redaction lets the journalist scrub these before sharing with editors, without copying the unscrubbed file to a SaaS vendor first.

FAQ

Is browser-based redaction as safe as desktop software like Acrobat Pro?

For the visual layer: yes โ€” both draw a covering rectangle. For deep redaction (removing the underlying text stream), iSharePDF's editor lets you erase content before covering. The architectural advantage is that the unredacted version never leaves your laptop, which Acrobat Pro shares but a SaaS web editor does not.

Can someone recover the redacted text by copy-pasting from the output?

If you only draw a black rectangle without erasing the underlying glyphs, yes โ€” the text remains in the PDF stream and can be selected. Use the "Erase content" tool first for a redaction that survives a copy-paste attack.
